Dragon Ball Super: Broly is an upcoming 2018 Japanese anime science fantasy action film, the twentieth movie in the Dragon Ball series, and the first to carry the Dragon Ball Super branding. It was first officially announced on December 17, 2017, and will be the third Dragon Ball film personally supervised by creator Akira Toriyama, following Resurrection ‘F’ in 2015.

Broly will be the first traditionally animated film to feature the eponymous character since 1994’s Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly (known as Sūpā Senshi Gekiha!! Katsu No wa Ore da in Japan), and the first to feature the character in a film personally written by series creator Akira Toriyama.

The film takes place after the Universe Survival Saga depicted in Dragon Ball Super. Under the tagline “the greatest enemy, Saiyan”, the film will depict the fate of series protagonist Goku and Vegeta as they encounter a new Saiyan called Broly. The movie will include the connection of the Frieza army, and the history of the Saiyans.

“This is the story of a new Saiyan. Earth is peaceful following the Tournament of Power. Realizing that the universes still hold many more strong people yet to see, Goku spends all his days training to reach even greater heights. Then one day, Goku and Vegeta are faced by a Saiyan called ‘Broly’ who they’ve never seen before. The Saiyans were supposed to have been almost completely wiped out in the destruction of Planet Vegeta, so what’s this one doing on Earth? This encounter between the three Saiyans who have followed completely different destinies turns into a stupendous battle, with even Frieza (back from Hell) getting caught up in the mix.”

Dragon Ball Super: Broly was originally announced under the tentative title of Dragon Ball Super – The Movie on December 17, 2017, during Jump Festa with the general theme being “The Strongest Warrior Race in the Universe, The Saiyans”. A poster was released on March 13, 2018, 11 days before the airing of the final episode of Dragon Ball Super, featuring an entirely new design for the protagonist Goku by Toei animator Naohiro Shintani, as opposed to veteran Dragon Ball character designer Tadayoshi Yamamuro. One week later, the first trailer for the film was released publicly through Toei Animation featuring the all new character designs and an enigmatic new villain.

On July 9, 2018, the movie’s title was revealed to be Dragon Ball Super: Broly, revealing the unknown villain to be the titular character who first appeared in the 1993 film Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan. Toriyama stated the character and his origin will be reworked, but with his classic image in mind. As a promotion, pre-order ticket holders will receive one of two charms of the characters Goku and Vegeta, whose hair changes based on the temperature of the figure.

Dragon Ball Super’s first feature film, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, is expected to deliver some major fan-service developments. One big development that’s been taking over the rumor mill lately is that Dragon Ball Super: Broly will include a climax that sees Goku and Vegeta fuse into their fusion dance form of Gogeta!

With Dragon Ball Super: Broly set after the events of the Dragon Ball Super anime, some fans have been speculating that DBS:B could actually see the debut of Ultra Instinct Gogeta, in order to match Broly’s Legendary Super Saiyan power. That’s just a fan wish — but if it does happen, we certainly hope it looks like this!

While this piece of art is undeniably stunning, it’s clearly different from the new animation aesthetic we’re getting with Dragon Ball Super: Broly. What it does do is capture the spirit of what a lot of fans want to see from Gogeta’s appearance in the movie; the Ultra Instinct upgrade would be new, and the attack he’s launching in the picture would definitely be a great finishing move against Broly — complete with image of the dragon appearing in the background. Hopefully, if the rumor and speculation is true, we’ll get to see Dragon Ball Super: Broly’s version of Gogeta sooner, before later.

Gogeta is just one of several popular Dragon Ball elements that is expected to be finally adapted into official canon via Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The fused warrior has only appeared in a Dragon Ball Z movie and the Dragon Ball GT anime, both of which are considered outside of official canon. Other elements of the mythos that Broly is expected to adapt into canon include the shared history of Planet Vegeta, Freeza and Beerus; Goku’s retconned origin story from Dragon Ball Minus; and of course, the origin and character of Broly himself. More and more, it’s looking like the movie’s secondary goal is basically cleaning up dangling threads of mythos, so that the series can move forward in much more streamlined fashion, afterward.

To be fair, jumping into Ultra Instinct Gogeta would skip over the character’s Super Saiyan Blue form — but really, we’ll take any version of him we can get.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly will hit Japanese theaters in December, and is expected to arrive in the U.S. around mid-January 2019. Dragon Ball Super is currently airing its English dub on Adult Swim during the Toonami programming block Saturday evenings at 9:30 p.m. ET. It is also available to stream on Funimation and Amazon Video. The Japanese language release of the series is complete and available to stream on Funimation, VRV and Crunchyroll.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the 20th Dragon Ball movie, and the first under the Dragon Ball Super banner. It is set to be released in Japan on December 14, 2018, with a North American release courtesy of Funimation set for January of 2019.

With the Tournament of Power behind them, Universe 7 has returned to a time of seeming peace. Having awakened to the fact that other Universes possess stronger fighters, Goku and Vegeta continue to train to fight stronger opponents in the future. However, the two of them run into a powerful new threat to their Universe: a Saiyan more powerful than anything they have ever fought. That Saiyan, is named Broly.

Taking place after the Tournament of Power, the movie will explore the origins of the Saiyans, and their relationship with Frieza. As well, we get to see the immense power of the Super Saiyan Blues take on the power of the Legendary Super Saiyan as Goku and Vegeta square off against Broly, who appears to have joined the revived Frieza’s army.

The movie marks the first time since 1992 where Tadayoshi Yamamuro will not be involved in any way regarding the film’s animation direction, with Naohiro Shintani taking over, introducing a smoother, less detailed art style, similar to the early arcs of Z. Much like Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’, series author Akira Toriyama is heavily involved in the film.
